Securing Loads on Presswood Pallets: Stretch Wrap and Strapping

A pallet can support its cargo while the cartons above it still slide, lean or separate. For European packaging and logistics teams, the practical buying question is how to specify a presswood pallet together with the packaging process that makes the goods and pallet behave as one load unit.

Define the two securing tasks

First, secure the goods to the pallet. Then arrange the securing of the complete unit in the vehicle. The UK's DVSA explicitly distinguishes these tasks in its guidance for palletised loads.

Give the packaging team responsibility for the load-unit design and agree the vehicle securing plan with the transport operator. A pallet load rating, a neat film finish or a pallet supplier's product specification alone cannot settle both decisions.

Build a specification around the actual goods

Start with one representative product and distribution route. The following is a proposed buyer's specification, to be completed with the packaging supplier and carrier.

Ask the pallet supplier to confirm the proposed attachment and band paths against the moulded geometry. Include a drawing or annotated photograph: “standard strapping” leaves too much room for interpretation.

Specify stretch wrapping as a controlled process

For each trial, record the film product, its nominal thickness, the wrapper programme, overlap, the treatment of the top and bottom of the load, and the actual material consumption. Ask the film supplier which measurements demonstrate the containment needed for this particular unit.

Have the trial examine whether the packaging connects the goods to the pallet as intended, whether film catches during handling and whether the lower cartons remain supported. Keep fork access usable. A wrapping pattern transferred from a different pallet geometry needs its own review.

Set the required performance before comparing film prices. A thinner film or fewer turns is a purchasing option only after the revised configuration has met the same agreed acceptance criteria.

Agree packaging-band routing and edge protection

Record the band material, width, joint method, application equipment and tension setting. Ask both the packaging and pallet suppliers to review contact points, including the underside of the deck and transitions around moulded feet. Assess the need for edge protectors and pressure distribution with the actual cartons or bags.

The UK's HSE pallet-safety guidance, PM15, warns that excessive strapping tension or incorrect positioning can damage a pallet. Include these failure modes in the review of your packaging arrangement.

The IMO/ILO/UNECE CTU Code, Annex 7, sections 4.1.3 and 4.1.7, treats wrapping and strapping as auxiliary securing measures and calls for arrangements that preserve the integrity of packages. Packaging bands and vehicle lashings have different functions; specify each separately.

There is no universal number of bands or tension setting for every presswood pallet and cargo combination. Obtain a documented configuration for the exact unit being qualified.

Qualify the complete load unit

Ask a competent packaging specialist or laboratory to agree a representative test plan before series production. Define the transport conditions represented, sample configurations and measurable acceptance limits. Include the actual pallet, goods, layer pattern, film, bands and protective elements.

The proposed evidence record should identify every component, machine settings, conditioning, test method and results, with photographs before and after testing. Include observations of load displacement, packaging damage and the pallet-to-load connection. Have the specialist determine which variants the results cover.

Plan a review when the pallet model, product mass, load height, carton design, film, band routing or distribution route changes. A successful trial supports the configuration tested and the scope stated in its report.

Connect the packaging decision to the destination market

For EU road transport, Directive 2014/47/EU, Annex III, addresses inspection of cargo securing, including the methods used and the strength of relevant vehicle components. It does not prescribe one stretch-wrap recipe. Ask the operator to check national implementation and the route-specific arrangement.

For Great Britain, use the DVSA guidance cited above and the HSE load-security guidance: the goods need stability at loading, before vehicle lashings provide restraint. Confirm the applicable local rules separately for Northern Ireland, Switzerland and non-EU EEA destinations.

Provide the carrier with the load-unit drawing, gross mass, test scope and agreed loading constraints. Have the carrier confirm vehicle suitability, restraint equipment and any required measures between adjacent loads.
