The equation: from dimensions to kilograms
Birch plywood sheet weight is calculated from volume and density:
Estimated net panel weight (kg) = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (m) × density (kg/m³)
Example density for birch plywood often used in calculations is 680 kg/m³ at approximately 65% RH (independent producer literature). Treat this only as an example input; confirm the actual density range for the specific Nord Panels product in your quotation.
Density should be determined according to an accepted test method. EN 323 describes the procedure for determining the density of wood-based panels; it is a measurement standard, not a prescribed density value.
Worked example (per sheet)
For a sheet 1220 × 2440 × 18 mm, using a 680 kg/m³ example density:
1.22 × 2.44 × 0.018 × 680 ≈ 36.4 kg net per sheet
Use this as a method illustration only. Your supplier’s confirmed density, sanding state (sanded/unsanded), overlay, and moisture content will shift the result.

From sheet weight to pack and shipment
1) Calculate pack net weight
Multiply the net sheet weight by the confirmed sheets per pack from your packing specification.
Illustration: If your confirmed packing is 40 sheets per pack of 1250 × 2500 × 18 mm and you apply the 38.2 kg example per sheet, then pack net ≈ 38.2 × 40 = 1,528 kg. If you order two such packs, the combined net product mass is 3,056 kg. Replace 38.2 kg with the supplier-confirmed value once provided.
2) Add packaging tare to get gross pack weight
Pallets, dunnage, edge/corner protectors, top/bottom boards, interleaves, wrapping and strapping add tare. Gross pack weight = pack net product mass + packaging tare. Tare varies by packaging concept and protection level—please request that Nord Panels states the expected tare per pack on the offer and packing list so you can plan truck payload precisely.
3) Roll up to shipment gross weight
For multi-pack consignments, sum all pack gross weights and any additional shipment materials (e.g., slip sheets, load bars) to get the gross shipment weight. This is the figure your carrier will compare to route- and vehicle-specific payload allowances.
What can change the weight?
- Density variance: Natural wood variation and manufacturing parameters mean each product/batch has a density range. Confirm it in the quotation.

- Thickness and sanding: Nominal vs calibrated thickness, and sanded vs unsanded faces, influence volume and therefore mass.
- Overlays/finishes: Film, paint or other surface overlays increase weight beyond the bare plywood calculation.

Transport planning in the EU: always confirm payload with your carrier
EU road transport operates under the framework set by Council Directive 96/53/EC on weights and dimensions, implemented across Member States with certain vehicle- and route-specific conditions and later amendments. Because the applicable gross and axle loads depend on the vehicle configuration, equipment (e.g., alternative fuel allowances), route and country rules, you should never rely on a single universal payload figure.

- Build in margin for moisture swings and packaging variance between quotation and loading day.
